No one thought that it would still take more than two weeks after the liberation of the city of Groningen on 16 April 1945 before the entire province was liberated. The battle for the 'Delfzijl Pocket', as the Canadians called the area where the German soldiers were trapped, was long and fierce and claimed many casualties.
Follow in the footsteps of the liberators who had to fight hard for the so-called Delfzijl Pocket. Visit monuments, bunkers and other remnants of this fierce battle that took place in April and May 1945. This route follows the northern advance of the Canadians.
